Wayne sprinted into the town centre, then began to walk as he got to the high street. He had no idea what to expect when he got to the book makers and was now cursing himself for oversleeping. It was nearly midday, and he knew he should have got to the bookies when it had opened. For all he knew, the mirror might have been spotted by now and took away, or worse. Linked to the other crimes Rupert had committed. All he could do was hope it was still there.

As Wayne walked past the antiques shop, he could see it looked the same and doubted the police had been back there. Walking up to the book makers window, he stopped and looked through the window. Thankfully, the mirror was still tucked behind the chair at the far end. He could see Gretchen behind the counter, who glanced up at him. All he needed to do now was try and sneak the mirror out without Gretchen seeing him. Wayne walked inside, and Gretchen then stared at him, then smiled.

“Back again so soon Wayne. You missed all the excitement.”

“Did I? Why what happened?”

“Got here this morning and we were robbed last night. The new girl I told you about took all of yesterday’s takings.”

“How do you know it was her?”

“I'm no detective, but the stupid girl turned off the CCTV, then didn’t bank the takings. She reckons she left them under the till.”

“Perhaps she did!”

“I doubt it. Turns out she owes money to everyone. I think she thought she might get away with it here. She lost her job for lifting money from the book makers in the town centre. Silly cow thought we would be a soft touch.”

“Oh... that is stupid.”

“Are you okay. You look tired.”

“No... I am fine. Just thought I might try my luck on...” Wayne quickly scanned the newspaper racing list on the back wall. “Fancy that. Looks good to me. I will have a five pound to win on Fancy that.”

Gretchen took the twenty, then rang up the bet and handed Wayne the betting slip and fifteen-pound change.

“Fifteen to one hey, good luck with that bet. Fancy a cup of tea. It's been dead in here all morning. I think the police being here has put the punters off today.

“Err, yeah. Go on then.”

“Won't be a tick.” Gretchen said, then popped out the back.

Wayne took his chance, and quickly raced round to the back table and slid the mirror out from behind the chair. Just as he got to the door, he shouted. “Skip the tea Gretchen, must dash.”

Gretchen popped her head back round the door, but Wayne had already left. She shrugged her shoulders, then went back to making the tea.
